Women leaders and sustainable development – truly equal

02. October 2019.

Although significant strides have been made in the last few decades, women are still exposed to various forms of discrimination in almost every country in the world. They are under-represented in important positions in politics and the economy, on average they are less paid than their male counterparts for the same work, and have very limited access to land or real estate ownership and manufacturing assets. The issue of overcoming this problem has also been recognized in Serbia as a priority in the process of building a modern society of equal opportunities for all. Accordingly, the Ministry of Labor, Employment, Veterans' and Social Affairs of the Government of the Republic of Serbia organized a conference aimed at raising awareness of the position of women in society. BALKAN PERSPECTIVES TODAY was hired to create the visual identity and concept of the conference. Also, BPT was entrusted with the full executive production of events and media reporting organizations—announcements, inviting and accreditation of journalists from the country and abroad, scheduling interviews, coordinating press conferences, sending press releases, and coordinating reporting.

About the conference

The International Conference "Women Leaders and Sustainable Development—Truly Equal" was held on October 2 and 3, 2019 at the Hyatt Hotel in Belgrade. During the two days, many national, regional, and global officials and experts spoke at five panels. The focus of interest was the affirmation of the contribution of women in leadership to the achievement of the United Nations Global Objectives, a kind of universal call to action, in which, among other things, women's empowerment and the promotion of gender equality are essential for achieving sustainable development faster. The conference also featured an exhibition honoring 15 prominent women from Serbia's history.

The event gathered more than 200 successful women from all over the world, including first ladies from four continents, women in positions in various social spheres, women from the banking system, the governor of the National Bank of Serbia, ministers, ambassadors, the president of the Constitutional Court, representatives of international and regional organizations, deputies, women entrepreneurs, women with disabilities, as well as media representatives. Through the exchange of experience and good practice, they have further contributed to the improvement of gender equality by analyzing the progress made and the current position of women in society. The message of the conference is that eliminating all forms of discrimination against women and girls is not only a matter of basic human rights, but also has multiple effects on other areas of development.
